Directions to Old Takoma

By Metro:

The Old Takoma shopping district stretches from the Takoma Metro station (4th St. and Carroll) east to the downtown area and beyond to Takoma Junction (Carroll and Rt. 410).

When exiting the Metro station, turn right and walk under the underpass to the 4th street stores, or head straight out the Metro's entrance and east on Carroll toward the downtown area.

By car:

From Maryland (north):

  • Travel south on New Hampshire Avenue (Rt. 650), which is Exit 28 from I-495 / The Beltway.
  • Turn right (west) onto Ethan Allen Ave. (Rt. 410, East-West Highway).
  • Travel 1 mile to Carroll Avenue (at the firehouse). This is Takoma Junction, the beginning of the Old Takoma district.

To continue to downtown Old Takoma...

  • Veer left onto Carroll at the firehouse stoplight. Do not continue on Rt. 410, which veers right.
  • Travel 2 blocks to the downtown area.

To continue to the 4th and Metro area...

  • Travel west 3 blocks on Carroll toward the Metro.

From Maryland and Virginia (west):

  • From I-495 / Beltway, take Exit 31 and travel south on Georgia Avenue.
  • After passing Colesville Rd (Rt. 29) in downtown Silver Spring, turn left onto either Wayne Avenue, Bonifant St., or Sligo Avenue.
  • Travel 1 block east to Fenton St. and turn right. Fenton St. runs parallel to Georgia Avenue.
  • Turn left onto Philadelphia Avenue (Rt. 410 / East-West Highway).
  • Travel 1 mile (cross Piney Branch Rd. and past stop sign) to Maple Avenue (at the Library / Municipal Center), and turn right onto Maple.
  • Travel 3 blocks to Carroll Avenue. Downtown Old Takoma is toward the left on Carroll, the 4th and Metro area is to the right on Carroll.

(Note: you can't turn left from Georgia Ave. onto East-West Highway)

From Bethesda:

  • Take Rt. 410 / East-West Highway through Silver Spring.
  • Continue on Rt. 410, cross Georgia Avenue, and past Montgomery College Takoma Park Campus. Rt. 410 is named Philadelphia Avenue through this section of Takoma Park.
  • Travel 1 mile (cross Piney Branch Rd. and past stop sign) to Maple Avenue (at the Library / Municipal Center), and turn right onto Maple.
  • Travel 3 blocks to Carroll Avenue. Downtown Old Takoma is toward the left on Carroll, the 4th and Metro area is to the right on Carroll.

From Hyattsville, College Park, and Adelphi:

  • Take Rt. 410 / East-West Highway west toward Takoma Park.
  • Rt. 410 crosses New Hampshire Avenue and is called Ethan Allen Avenue through this section of Takoma Park.
  • Travel 1 mile to Carroll Avenue (at the firehouse). This area is Takoma Junction, the beginning of the Old Takoma district.

To continue to downtown Old Takoma...

  • Veer left onto Carroll at the firehouse stoplight. Do not continue on Rt. 410, which veers right.
  • Travel 2 blocks to the downtown area.

To continue to the 4th and Metro area...

  • Travel west 3 blocks on Carroll toward the Metro.

From Downtown DC and Virginia (south):

  • Travel north on 16th Street NW, 13th Street NW, or Georgia Avenue NW toward the Walter Reed neighborhood.
  • Turn right on Aspen Street NW and travel to 4th Street NW.
  • Turn left onto 4th Street. This is the 4th and Metro section of Old Takoma.

To continue to downtown Old Takoma...

  • Continue on 4th Street 2 blocks until it ends at the intersection with Carroll at the Metro overpass.
  • Turn right onto Cedar. Continue straight (Cedar becomes Carroll St. at the 7-11) and travel east 3 blocks to downtown Old Takoma.
